This is something that many people will believe is a trivial issue, and maybe it is. But ever since about my third week on campus as a freshman living in Carocci Hall, it became one of my pet peeves about Newman’s campus.
The allotment and placement of trash cans on campus is ludicrous.
There are simply not enough to go around. For example, there are no trash cans in the lobbies of any of the residence halls. This is extremely annoying when you are enjoying a snack while playing ping pong and there is simply no place to dispose of your trash. It leads to things that are not recycling being put in the recycle bins as well as trash just being left out in the lobby.
I currently live in Beata, and to take out your trash, you have to walk all the way across the parking lot to the dumpster. This may not sound too bad, but when you live on the third floor and it is cold outside, it becomes a large inconvenience.
The residence halls, however, are just the start of the problem. If you walk around campus you will quickly notice that there are not nearly enough trash cans to go around and the ones that are there are put in extremely questionable locations.
The biggest example of this is by the entrance to Gorges Atrium. The only trash can in the area is next to the building about 15 feet from the door, back in the corner and not even near the sidewalk, and it’s welded to the ground. No one, not even the most environmentally conscious individuals, are going to notice this trash can and trek through the grass to dispose of their Scooter’s cups.
There is a very simple solution to this problem: place a trash can just outside of every exterior door to every building on campus. Not only would this be convenient, it would decrease the amount of litter on campus.
This is a simple way to make Newman’s campus more convenient for the students.
Don’t even get me started on the sidewalks.
