For young adults of legal drinking age, Wichita’s nightlife is blooming as the city continues to grow and expand its collection of local breweries and nightclubs. As for those under 21 - not so much.
The only 18-and-over nightlife that Wichita has seen in the past few years is at Club Rodeo, and many under-21 adults complain that cowboy boots and pearl snaps aren’t really their scene. However, as of October, Tarragon’s on Central and West is open to the public and welcomes all adults looking for a change of plans.
As I walked through the front doors of the bar and grill on Monday evening, I was pleased to find that there was no cover charge and was greeted by a dance floor and pool tables to my left, a gaming space to my right and general seating in the middle.
In addition to these features, the business offers a dance floor and multiple TV’s throughout the space, allowing its customers to keep track of whatever sporting event they please. The staff was friendly and willing to change the TV to the OKC Thunder game on channel 34.
Though it was a quiet Monday evening, staff explained that they bring in DJ’s on the weekends and also offer karaoke nights on Wednesdays, which have apparently drawn in a decent-sized crowd.
I was slightly disappointed to hear that their kitchen still had not opened, as I’d skipped dinner in preparation for the evening. However, staff told me that they hope to open it soon and plan to sell a variety of bar food, including chicken strips and onion rings.
Staff said that they hope to draw students from Newman, Friends and Wichita State.
Newman senior Cory Clausing said that the new spot has something to put forward for students.
“It offered some cool options to hang out and enjoy, like the games and pool tables. The space itself would be fun to hang out with a group of friends,” Clausing said.
Tarragon’s is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. All ages are welcome until 9 p.m., at which time you must be at least 18 or older.
