A new discount program, PerkSpot, is now available for students and staff at Newman University. The program, which went live on Dec. 19, features everyday discounts with providers that PerkSpot has negotiated with, said Katie Link, Newman’s Human Resources Business Partner.
Link said a staff member, whose previous employers used PerkSpot, brought the program to her attention.
“I reached out to PerkSpot and an account executive called me and gave an overview of the program. He showed me the site and the different discounts that are available,” she said in an email.
After contacting PerkSpot, Link introduced the program to the Dean of Students who recommended that SGA should vote on it. SGA approved this initiative.
Some students are skeptical of the discount program.
“I thought it was a spam email when I first saw it in my inbox,” said senior Matthew Nguyen.
The program is available to the Newman community for free. There are a handful of categories including apparel, automotive, flowers and gifts, insurance protection, real estate and moving services, movie tickets and more.
Since Newman has gotten the service, Link has found some deals that she thinks are going to be popular.
“I think the most beneficial discount that I have used is on movie tickets. PerkSpot has listed a discount with Regal Theatres to pay $9.45 per ticket instead of $13, which is a good discount when you are buying for your whole family.”
Link is unable to directly keep track of what perks are being used, but the site lists trending discounts that the community is taking advantage of. Top companies right now include Costco, Samsung, Home Chef, TurboTax, Dell, Walt Disney and Garmin.
Members who would like to see a discount through a company that is not currently listed are invited to email their request to Link or add their suggestions through the top right bar on the website.
