Newman Athletics will soon be seeing a change in the weight room. Assistant Athletic Performance Coach Brandon Strausser has accepted a position as the assistant director of sports performance at Eastern Kentucky University, a Division I school in Richmond, Kentucky.

“I’m excited to live in and explore a different part of the United States, meet new people and have adventures alongside my girlfriend,” he said.

Strausser said he will be working with Eastern Kentuckys’ baseball, women’s golf and women’s soccer teams.

“I am excited to work with a new group of coaches and student athletes to help positively impact their lives by providing the best possible experience, service and care to each person,” Strausser said.

Strausser, who started at Newman in the fall of 2021, was the school’s first assistant athletic performance coach.

“It was a tremendous experience, and I can’t thank Coach Hayden Jones enough for bringing me on staff,” he said.

During his time at Newman, Strausser worked with the softball, men’s basketball, men’s soccer, triathlon, tennis, golf, and cross country teams.

“I’m going to greatly miss all the student athletes that I was so blessed and fortunate to work with,” he said. “I ultimately strive to help them achieve greatness in all aspects of life by showing them love, care, encouragement and life lessons.”

Junior cross country runner Caroline Williams is one of many who said she will miss Strausser.

“I’ll definitely miss having a coach that has worked with people in my sport before,” she said. “Coach B was really knowledgeable and helpful whenever me or teammates had questions. Plus he made the workouts a lot of fun.”

Jones said that Newman plans to hire a new assistant athletic performance coach but did not share further details.
