Student Life planning formal dance for November

Get out your old homecoming dresses and get excited for Newman’s Fall Formal.

The formal dance, a new event for Newman, will be from 8 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 12 in the Dugan Conference Center.

Alondra Valle, a sophomore who works for student life, came up with the idea for the dance after she heard students talking about how much they like the Jetspys, the formal banquet and awards show held for athletics at the end of every school year. She also said she realized that a lot of younger students probably did not get to attend many dances in high school because of COVID-19.

“I wanted to see if it was possible to create a dance here at Newman,” Valle said.

The dance will include snacks, photo booths, a DJ and more. The theme of the dance will be “Studio 33,” inspired by “Studio 54,” a famous New York City disco club in the 1970s.

“The dance is open to any Newman student and their dates or who they want to bring does not have to be a Newman student,” Valle said. Students will be asked to RSVP, but it likely will not cost anything to attend the formal.

Those interested in helping can contact Alondra Valle or Kaitlyn Matthews by email for more information.

Felisa, a sophomore at Newman said she liked the idea of a formal dance.

“It is a fun way to bring the community together for those who haven't gone to a school dance and have the opportunity to be able to experience an event filled with love, fun, and laughter,” she said.
