Ways to celebrate the Halloween season at Newman

By Anna Corbett, Staff Writer

With October in full swing, Newman is offering lots of activities for students, including Halloween and cultural events. Here are some of them:

Halloween Sloppy Joes show

The Sloppy Joes improv troupe is putting on an After Dark show at 10 p.m. on Oct. 25 in the Jabara Black Box Theater in DeMattias Performance Hall. This will be an R-rated show. Audience members are encouraged to dress up for a costume contest and a chance to win a prize. Costumes are required to be appropriate to be considered for the competition.

Field of Screams trip

Newman students can sign-up to join their peers on a trip to haunted attraction Field of Screams at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27. Field of Screams is at 4055 N. Tyler in Maize. This is a free event for students who have signed up. Spots have filled up quickly and there is currently a wait list. Students who have already secured a spot should meet at the location.

Pumpkin carving/smashing

Campus Activities Board will be putting on two events that involve pumpkins, both in the student center. From 10 a.m to 3 p.m. on Oct. 28 students will be invited to participate in a pumpkin carving competition. Then from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 29, they’ll have the opportunity to smash their pumpkins.

Pumpkin painting

The Mental Health Advocates of Newman will put on a pumpkin painting event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 29 in the living room of Sacred Heart’s ground floor. Pumpkins will be provided, but students are expected to RSVP if they plan to attend. It will be free for all staff and students.

Intramural Costume Dodgeball

Intramural costume dodgeball will happen at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 in Fugate Gym. Teams of eight made up of four females and four males can compete. There will be a costume contest with prizes for the best-dressed individual as well as for the winning team. Teams can sign up by following links on the NU student affairs Instagram page or by scanning QR codes on posters around campus.

Dia De Los Muertos

This event is being put on by the Hispanic American Leadership Organization. It will be held in the atrium in Dugan Library, where decorations will honor members’ loved ones who have passed on. There will be food, games, prizes, music and a mass after the event. This will happen from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 6. Dia de Los Muertos is a day that Hispanic cultures pay their respects to loved ones who have passed on. The translation is “Day of the Dead.” It's typically observed every year from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2.
