Newman has a new Dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health in Geri Tyrell.
Tyrell was recently hired to replace Jane Weilert, who retired in 2020. Her first day was Jan. 3.
Tyrell obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Bethel College, her Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Educational Leadership from American Sentinel University.
Her clinical background was obtained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatrics. She said she loves working with children.
Tyrell worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and at a pediatrics clinic in Newton. She began her teaching career in nursing as an adjunct clinical instructor at Bethel College in 2008. The next fall, she began teaching as a full-time instructor at Bethel College.
In 2014, Tyrell became the Director of the department of nursing at Bethel College and continued in that position until December, when she left to join the Newman staff.
Tyrell sai she is excited to be a part of the Newman community and feels welcomed by everyone.
“I was really drawn to Newman because of the four core values, which I connect with personally,” Tyrell said. “When such a connection exists, being able to grow both personally and professionally allows for an expanded development for both the individual and the institution.”
Tyrell said that she wants to engage with the students and the various student organizations and leaders to learn more about the School of Nursing and Allied Health students’ needs.
“They are always welcome to come by my office to say hi, ask a question or discuss anything,” Tyrell said.
