Newman’s baseball team is starting the year off by cleaning up campus. Coach Drew Maus said that he and the team wanted to give back to the school and community that supported them and that he thinks it is important for the players to take ownership of their experience at Newman.
“It is a privilege to play college baseball,” Maus said. “With that privilege comes the responsibility of giving back whenever we can.”
The team worked on the flower beds between DeMattias, the dining hall, and in front of Fugate by pulling weeds, trimming the trees and bushes, and adding mulch to help bring life back to the once dead looking areas.
This is the team's third year of pitching in to make Newman beautiful.
Maus said that words without actions are meaningless, and thinks it is important to keep the campus looking nice, especially with low staff numbers.
Freshman Thomas Munn, a catcher on the team, said he agreed.
“We are doing this not only to give back to the community that supports us, but to show pride in our campus,” he said.
