Newman University’s 24-Hour Theatre Project happened again over the weekend and drew teams of thespians willing to write, direct, rehearse and perform a short play all within a 24 hour period.

Three teams competed, and organizers allowed not only students and faculty to compete but also members of the community at large.

The winning play was called “A Pirate’s Life.” Newman graduates Austin and Brenden Schwartz and Madeline Schnieders created and starred in the play along with the Schwartz brothers’ father and two high school students.

The winning play was the only comedy in the competition, and it centered around a grieving bride whose husband was killed at the wedding. Her therapist helps her learn to become a pirate, and she sails away with her late husband’s spirit.

Competitors showed up at 7 p.m. on Friday, and they had to perform their plays in the Jabara Flexible Theatre at 8 p.m. the next night.
