Competitors in Tuesday’s Dodgeball Tournament at Newman might want to remember the great quote from legend Patches O’Houlihan in the 2004 film “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.”
“If you’re going to become a true dodgeballer, then you’ve got to learn the five d’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.”
All students and staff are welcome to join this first-ever dodgeball tournament, which happens at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 in Fugate Gymnasium.
Joshua Prilliman, director of student life, said he came up with the idea for the tournament after going through a Newman storage area and finding a bunch of dodgeballs. The Student Life staff was all ears when Prilliman suggested the tournament.
“No one else at Newman has really hosted dodgeball from what I know of,” Prilliman said.
The tournament will be a double elimination event, and the ultimate winners will get their names engraved on a 28-inch trophy that will be displayed somewhere around Newman.
There is no cost to sign up. Those who want to participate should follow the QR code on the event flier on the nustudentaffairs Instagram account. Teams must each have four men and four women, and competitors also must wear clean shoes.
One of the players participating in the event is Isabella Callaba from Newman’s golf team.
“I’m super pumped about this event,”she said. “I think it’ll be fun.”
She added that she’s sure her team, titled “Balls Deep” will win.
“I am hopeful this will be a consistent thing for Newman,” Callaba said.
Prilliman said he hopes the tournament is “a start of something fun for students to get involved with other than classes or sports and just have a great time.”
