Students, faculty and staff haven’t had a reliable way to buy Newman-branded “merch” since the bookstore – which used to be in Dugan Library – closed in 2020.
But earlier this week, the athletic department put on a little pop-up shop in the Gorges Atrium on the main floor of DeMattias Hall. It was set up on Tuesday and featured folding tables piled with Newman-branded T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and shorts. The sale also offered things like ball caps, winter hats, blankets, coasters, lanyards – even golf club headcovers.
Athletic Director Joanna Pryor, who staffed the sale and checked shoppers out, said that the athletic department always has Newman merchandise on hand. But it’s stored in tubs in the department’s offices, and if people want it, the staff has to go digging through the tubs.
She said she liked the idea of a popup because it allows the staff to get all the merchandise out and move some of it.
Pryor said she’s considering putting on more pop-up sales: maybe one just before Christmas and another in the spring. Those sales may have a few more items, including things like sweatpants.
