Get ready Newman: The party of the year is about to start.
The Party on the Plaza is happening from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and the theme is “Roaring 20’s.” Admission is $120.
The Party on the Plaza is a big night for the university, as it's when a lot of money is raised for scholarships.
“We encourage everybody to participate in any capacity that they can,” said Abbi Timmermeyer, Newman’s event coordinator and the director of the party. “Every dollar that everybody donates, all of the proceeds go towards student scholarships. …There's a very high percentage of students who receive scholarships to come to Newman, and this night is a really really big part of that.”
Though few students can afford the admission ticket, many participate as volunteers. Newman’s singing troubadours will perform at the event, and cast members from the musical “Between the Lines,” which will be staged in November, also will perform selections from the show.
The university always gives the party a theme, and this year, the theme reflects one of the most eccentric times in American history: the Roaring ’20s.
“We just attached a theme to it just to make it a little bit more fun a little bit more exciting so people would want to participate,” Timmermeyer said.
There will be live and silent auctions at the event that will be open to bids by party attendees, many of whom are university benefactors and donors. Food and refreshments will be provided along with a prime rib dinner, adult beverages. To go along with the theme, the party will have a speakeasy-style bourbon tasting.
Guests are expected to wear dress-casual or to dress according to the theme.
