When you go around any college campus these days, there is a good probability that you will see students wearing Ugg slippers in place of shoes. It's an undeniable trend, one that has taken off in a big way. But, I find myself confused each time I come across someone wearing these puffy shoes.
In the Republic of Georgia, where I was born and raised, the idea of wearing slippers anywhere outside of the house, especially to school, would be considered extremely strange. In Georgia, we take great pride in dressing in a manner that is both elegant and formal. We make it a point always, whether we are going to work, to school, or even to a casual get together. Slippers are considered to be part of an indoor outfit. Calling them "shoes" would be extremely absurd.
But here's the twist: The more time I've spent in America, the more my perspective has shifted. To my own surprise, I've caught myself browsing Ugg slippers online, considering buying a pair. While they may not win any fashion awards, there's no denying that they look incredibly comfortable, and I feel like in America, I’ve joined a world in which comfort is the most important thing and style is really a secondary concern. Until now, I hadn't really given much thought to this approach to the fashion industry.
As someone who was brought up to constantly "dress to impress," this change feels foreign to me. Still, there is something thrilling about the concept of prioritizing comfort, even if it requires me to step outside of my comfort zone.
I’ve come to the realization that fashion is not only about looking good. It is also about how the clothing you wear makes you feel. Ugg slippers are a perfect example of this idea. They have an inviting and cozy vibe, and I'm starting to realize that they aren't quite as unusual as I had previously thought they were.
But they’re still a little bit ugly.
