Dia de los Muertos, otherwise known as the “Day of the Dead,” is a Latin holiday that celebrates the lives of deceased loved ones. On Nov. 6, Newman’s Hispanic American Leadership Organization put on an event on campus to observe the holiday.
HALO President Melissa Arguijo said she was excited that the event had so much participation from local businesses.
“The event was packed full of activities, including many small local vendors selling handmade goods and jewelry,” Arguijo said.
Those who attended the event also participated in games of Loteria, a traditional Mexican game often compared to Bingo. The Campus Activities Board provided a photo booth, and Campus Ministry gave guests the opportunity to create their own rosaries. There was a raffle that had a multitude of prizes as well as performances by the band Mariachi Los Reyes. There was also traditional Mexican folk dancing and salsa lessons from Baila Wichita.
Mama Rosa Catering was sold out of food by the end of the night. According to estimates made by HALO officials, more than 200 people participated in the event.
Junior Nathan Galacia was at the event with Campus Ministry helping create homemade rosaries with guests.
“My favorite part of the event was seeing all of the different booths and organizations that were out there,” Galicia said. “I loved talking to them and learning about what they do and offer.”
