The Newman University men's basketball team opened its season on Saturday with an 80-64 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University at the Arkansas Tech Classic in Russellville, Arkansas.
Now with a 1-1 record, the Jets want to showcase their potential as they prepare to face Kansas Christian College at 3 p.m. Saturday at home.
Leading the charge in the season opener, senior Boston Stanton III scored a team-high 15 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field. Sophomore Sam Somerhalder added 13 points while contributing four rebounds and four assists. Junior Thatcher McClure had nine points and six rebounds, while freshman Jayden Schoen chipped in eight points.
“Our goal this season is to make the conference tournament and ultimately to win it,” said assistant coach Noah Gosse. “With so many new faces, building a cohesive unit is vital, and the guys have been stepping up.”
The Jets' roster features a mix of experience and new talent, including eight incoming freshmen and several junior transfers. This blend of youth and leadership offers both challenges and opportunities, Gosse said, but he is optimistic about their progress.
“The team chemistry is growing,” he said. “It’s primarily a new group, so the players are learning how to work together. That growth will be key as the season unfolds.”
The returning players, including Stanton, Somerhalder, and key leaders like junior Jacob Joe and sophomore Devin Walker, have been tasked with guiding their younger teammates.
“We’re expecting our returning players to be great leaders, both on the court and in the classroom,” Gosse said. “Their example is crucial as our newcomers learn the system.”
For Gosse, the mission extends beyond wins and losses.
“As an assistant coach, one of my biggest goals is to help the players reach their personal and athletic goals,” he said. “I want to put them in the best situations to succeed, on and off the court.”
