For almost 10 years, undergraduate students have been able to enjoy free memberships to Genesis Health Clubs in Wichita.
The partnership began in 2015, and membership benefits have been expanded over the years. Dr. Andi Giesen, associate vice president for student affairs, highlighted the numerous facilities and benefits available to students.
“Students have access to all six Wichita-area locations and their many features: cardio and strength training equipment, swimming, tennis, MMA, basketball courts, group fitness classes, and so much more,” Giesen said. “We’ve even added features like free membership during school breaks, which allows many of our students to use the gym seamlessly when they’re home.”
Genesis memberships also come with other benefits, including free personal training sessions, access to more than 70 clubs in 11 states, and discounts at local attractions like Blast Off Bay Water Park, Giesen said.
“Discounted membership pricing for graduates who want to continue their membership is another highlight,” she said. “We really aim to support our students’ health and wellness year-round.”
The Student Government Association pays the membership fees.
SGA President Alondra Valle said SGA is committed to supporting students’ wellness.
“SGA keeps paying for this membership because we believe physical health is just as important as mental health,” Valle said. “Every year, the student body president meets with a Genesis representative during the summer to review goals, evaluate the previous year, and discuss improvements.”
Ali Mounir, a member of Newman’s men’s tennis team, said the club has become an integral part of his daily life.
“When I first came to Newman, my coach told me we practice at Genesis,” Mounir said. “I learned that we don’t just practice there, we have a free membership. I can work out, use the courts, the pool, and anything else I need.
“Genesis offers the space and equipment I need, and I don’t have to pay for it,” he said. “If I didn’t have this membership, it would have been hard to afford something similar.”
Mounir said that Genesis creates a feeling of community outside of its facilities.
"At first, I didn't think I'd use the membership much, but I've connected with trainers and staff, made friends, and met new people," he said. "Being a part of something like this is memorable and beneficial for the future, and it's a good community."
