Hopes are high for new beginnings this semester

By Victor Dixon, Editor-in-Chief

Welcome back to campus and to a semester full of new things. We’ve entered a new calendar year, a fresh start for many, and also a new presidential term.

I hope you had a refreshing long break because you’re going to need that rest. Times are changing, whether you like it or not, and it’s coming at you like a big, fat brick wall.

Change is hard on an individual level, and it can feel so overwhelming when it’s amplified to include whole communities and even nations. However, the Newman community is a strong one and although we will all inevitably be changed, I believe we will come out the other side even stronger.

In the midst of all the things happening in the world and in your lives, remember these two things over everything else. First: Make sure to carve out time to do things that make you feel happy and fulfilled, like the best version of yourself, because that is how you renew the energy you need to change the world and endure the ways it changes you.

Second: Never, ever be quiet. Now more than ever it is important to make your beliefs and values known and to adequately educate yourself and others about the issues that are central to that.

Throughout this semester, you will continue to live out the Newman mission of transforming society by being an educated person in this world doing what you love, but it doesn’t come without the effort and courage to embrace the change and flow with it.
