Newman’s basketball teams will both play their final two games of the season on the road tonight and on Saturday.

The men, whose record on the season is 14-12, will play at 7:30 p.m. tonight vs. Northwest Missouri in Maryville, Missouri. Then, on Saturday, they’ll meet Missouri Western at 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The women, whose record stands at 7-19, will play at 5:30 p.m. tonight vs. Northwest Missouri and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday vs. Missouri Western.

Both teams wrapped up their home seasons on Saturday in Fugate Gymnasium, when the men’s team was able to pull out an 89-85 win over Emporia State University. The Jets were led by senior Boston Stanton III, who hit a three-pointer with 32 seconds left on the clock, giving the Jets a five-point lead. Stanton scored a career-high 30 points in the game.

Though Emporia State would fight back to within two, free-throws in the final seconds helped Newman secure the win.

The women, meanwhile, lost to Emporia State by just six points, having delivered a fourth-quarter comeback that saw Emporia’s lead cut to one point with just over two minutes to play. But the final score was 69-63. Sophomore Jaeden McMillin scored 22 points during the game, leading the team, and also got eight rebounds.

In between games on Saturday, both teams honored their senior players. The men are graduating guard Stanton and center Isaiah Elmore, while the women will lose guard Hayley Hughes.

The MIAA Championship Tournament is scheduled for March 5-9 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The top 10 teams in the conference will play. As of now, Newman’s men are ranked 10th, and the women are ranked 13th.
