Baseball hopes to reach success after rough start to season

The spring sun is shining, and Newman baseball players dressed in white pinstripes are now drawing fans to the stands at McCarthy Field.

Newman baseball is nearly two months into another season, and so far, the team’s record is 8-18 overall and 4-13 in conference play.

The team has struggled so far this season, said senior Lance Elsen, but the offense has been able to produce and keep the team in many games.

“The offense has had some great moments this season,” Elsen said. In fact, the offense helped the Jets beat Rogers State in game two of a series in early March, and Rogers State was ranked at the time.

Three Jets lead the team with their bats. Graduate student Trent Trammell leads overall in batting average, hitting a .433. Next is graduate student Blake Mitchell, batting a .365. Following is redshirt junior Micah Kobuszewski with a .330. average.

The team also had two big wins this season. One was over Missouri Western State University on March 15, when Mitchell hit a walk off fielder's choice in the 10th inning. The other was against Southern Nazarene University on March 11, when the Jets won in extra innings, and transfer junior Scott Allan hit a walk off sac fly to secure the win in the 10th inning.

“We need to keep showing up to work everyday,” Kobuszewski said. “The season can get long, especially when it isn't going well. If we focus on showing up expecting to win, that will ensure we finish the season on a high note.”

The Jets are back in action at University of Central Oklahoma Friday through Sunday. They’ll return to McCarthy Field at 3 p.m. Tuesday, when they will face Missouri Southern State University.
