Campaigning for next year’s Student Government Association leadership positions began on Wednesday, and for the first time in two years, Newman will have a contested election for SGA President.
Voting opens on Wednesday for president and vice president, who run together, and for 11 at-large senators, and six department chair senators. Five senator positions will be reserved for incoming first-year students, and that election will be held during the fall.
All SGA positions are elected yearly except for treasurer, secretary and committee representatives, who will be appointed by the newly elected president and approved by SGA’s adviser and Dean of Students, Andi Geisen.
Some candidates have already begun their campaigns over social media, including presidential candidates Gabe Trevino and Nathan Galicia, both juniors. During the last two elections, SGA President, senior Alondra Valle, who will be graduating this year, ran uncontested for the presidential position.
Trevino is running alongside vice presidential candidate Maxwell Masem, a sophomore.
Galicia is running alongside vice presidential candidate Faith Crabb, a junior. Galicia has also said that his executive board would be rounded out by junior Thomas Munn and sophomore Melissa Arguijo.
Online voting for the candidates will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and will remain open until noon on April 9. In previous years, candidates have campaigned through the Student Body GroupMe and through paper flyers posted around campus.
Voting links will be sent in the Student Body GroupMe and the Jet Broadcast.
