Every Monday night in April, Fugate Gymnasium will be filled with the sounds of shoes squeaking and basketballs bouncing. Intramural basketball, put on by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, is back, and it’s not too late to sign up.
Junior Alex Schreiner has taken on the role of putting the event together this semester.
“I am excited for this year's intramurals,” Schreiner said. “There is going to be good competition this year.”
The staff team will be the ones to beat this year, Schreiner said.
Teams must include both men and women, and two girls must be on the court at all times. A new rule this year for intramurals basketball: the girls must be actively participating throughout the game and putting in effort. If not, the other team will be awarded points.
Athletes are allowed to play but must have permission from their coaches.
Last-minute signups are still allowed until 4 p.m. every Monday.
Each week, each team will play two games. Last year, a team of seminarians was the winner. But will they defend the title?
So far, six teams have signed up: Team Zach — which is the staff team — plus, Team Enrico, Team Philip, Team Colby, Team Jacob and Team Gabe.
Team Zach, Team Jacob and Team Philip started strong, going 2-0. Team Enrico, Team Gabe and Team Colby fell short and sit at 0-2.
Junior Travia Smith, a player on Team Colby, said she was excited to show her skills on the court.
“I am ready to count how many people I cross up,” Smith said with a chuckle. “Even though it may be zero and I am the one getting crossed up.”
Junior Kaila Kaahu said that she is excited to be playing basketball again. It's always been a hobby of hers since she was little. She is also ready to be part of her first Newman event.
“I used to play all of the time and now I can again,” Kaahu said. “But man, I hope the other teams are ready for my three celly.”
