Many students at Newman University roll out of bed and throw on their nearest pair of sweatpants, a hoodie, and some slippers.
But those taking a class with Professor Audrey Hane are quickly reminded that style is alive on campus.
Hane, a communication professor, is well known for her fashion sense and often turns heads when walking on campus or into her classrooms.
One look recently caught the eyes of many: a bright pink dress with pink stripes that was also covered in tigers. She paired the dress with high-heeled ankle boots.
“I am not a very crafty person so this is my way of being creative,” Hane said.
Fashion has always been a part of Hane’s life. When she was younger, she worked in clothing stores and developed an eye for style. Now as a professor, she sees every day as an opportunity to express her love for fashion through her outfits.
“I wish I had a consistent style, but I really like a lot of styles,” Hane said. “I am really drawn to color.”
Now that spring has arrived, she said, she is excited to be able to bring out some of her favorite pieces. Fall and winter are not her favorite seasons for clothing, she said, since people tend to wear more dark and dull colors.
Her style is not just visual. It is also recognizable by sound. Students always know when Hane is approaching before they even see her.
“I always know she is coming into class when I hear the click-clack of her heels in the hallway,” first-year student Charlize Williams said. “Her outfits are always so cute, and it makes me want to dress up.”
Speaking of heels, Hane said that heels are her favorite shoes because they are the most comfortable for her.
“People on the first floor always tell me they can hear me walking to my office because of my heels,” Hane said.“...I am glad that I get to dress up for work and at the same time it's nice because I can be a little less professional than if I was an attorney or worked at a bank.”
Hane said her two of her favorite places to shop in Wichita are The Pink Saloon, 1423 N. Webb Road, and The LBD, Etc., 2132 N. Rock Road.
“I really like to shop locally and support small businesses,” Hane said.
Ultimately, Hane’s love for fashion is more than just about looking good — it’s about self-expression, creativity and bringing a little extra joy to each day.
“I have always loved fashion, and I am just happy I get to put my creative spirit into my clothes every day,” Hane said.
