It’s mid-April, which means that the semester is coming to a close and so are the seasons for Newman’s several spring sports.
Here’s where Newman’s teams stand as the school year winds down.
Baseball: The Jets have struggled this year and as of Wednesday have a 9-28 overall record, 5-22 in conference play. Last week, the team traveled to Maryville, Missouri, where it faced the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats in a three-game series. Though the Bearcats took game one in extra innings, the Jets lost 10-6. It also lost game two. But the team made a comeback during the series finale on Sunday and won 12-11.
During the game, graduate student Blake Mitchell hit a grand slam for four RBIs, and junior Nicolas Ely and senior Hunter Brown both went 3-5 from the plate. Next up: the Jets host the Fort Hays State Tigers at home for a three game series that runs today through Sunday. The Tigers have an overall record of 27-10, 21-5 in conference play. They are ranked No. 23 in this week’s American Baseball Coaches Association coaches poll.
Softball: The 2025 season also has been tough on the Jets softball team, which has a 7-37 overall record, 2-16 in conference play. The team most recently traveled to Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Oklahoma, for its last non-conference doubleheader of the season. But the team lost both of its games against the Rangers, the first one 9-14 and the second 7-8. Redshirt junior AJ Borja had a good performance in both games, though, and went 2-3 with a triple and scores for two runs in the first game and going 2-4 from the plate with a run and an RBI in the second. The Jets will play again on Friday when they travel to Warrensburg, Missouri, for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. games against the University of Central Missouri Mules.
