We’re graduating not checking into the nursing home

People tend to give a shout out to the people that got it all figured out. The students that have been accepted into med school, or law school or have been offered a job at some fortune 500 company. But me?

I’m giving a shout out for the seniors who don’t know what the h-e-double-hockey-sticks they’re doing in four weeks.

Listen. Think about it. We spend our whole childhood thinking about growing up. Going to college, getting jobs, being famous-- but then we get here, work towards our degree and all we can think about is how much we miss our kindergarten naptime.

It’s taken me awhile to get to this point. To finally take a breath and step out of the rush of my peers who are holding their heads in their hands with glassy eyes and saying, “I don’t know what I’m going to do” with crippling despair about where they’re going to be at the end of May.

If this is you, I have a simple three step process: Don’t freak out. Take a breath. And realize you’re going to be fine.

We spend so much time rushing into things and stressing about the future that we forget to live now, in this moment. We’re not enjoying friends or that build up to graduation. We’re not spending time with family that we might be moving away from. We keep forgetting to show gratitude and appreciation to our staff and faculty that, realistically, will probably get updates via Facebook and never hear from us again.

So stop worrying. You’re not going to end up on the streets. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Take a breath, put your shoulders back and remember that you have six months to start paying back your loans. Take that time to experience life. Travel a little, explore new cities you might want to live in and apply for jobs that might not be your “dream.” You’re not going to be exactly where you want to be right after graduation. You have to work and experience life first. That’s what makes you better. That’s what makes you unique.

Take time and don’t rush life because we all know it flies by way too quick.
