Director of Student Activities position empty

By: Madeline Schnieders, Managing Editor

The position of Director of Student Activities has been empty since Chris Mershon left last semester shortly before Winter Break. She had filled the role from July to December, 2021.

When asked why she left Newman, Mershon said she did not wish to comment.

Vanessa Rials, director of multicultural engagement, said that the position may not be filled until next year because Newman is in a partnership to fill the role with an organization called Lead for Kansas (LFK). LFK is a program that helps college graduates who join as fellows find jobs in Kansas.

“Chris was the first fellow we received,” Rials said.

Christine Schneikart-Luebbe, vice president of enrollment management and student success, said that Newman decided to partner with LFK when Joseph Shepard, former director of multicultural engagement at Newman and now director of Lead for Kansas, approached the university with the opportunity.

“It seemed like a great fit for both LFK and for Newman University,” Schneikart-Luebbe said. “We are still hoping to partner with them in the future,” she said.
