Audition for theatre department’s student-directed plays

Vantage Staff

Newman University’s Theatre Department will be putting on three one-act student-directed plays later this semester, and auditions are still underway.

The plays will be staged April 4-6 in Jabara Flexible Theatre. Although the student directors have already cast some actors, all three are still looking for performers. Auditions specifically open to Newman students were held Wednesday in Jabara for all three plays, but the public auditions being held on Saturday are still open to any Newman students who missed out.

Here’s a what each student is working on and how to audition:

“Voyage of the Dawn Treader” — Senior John Suffield is directing this play by C.S. Lewis. It follows Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, who return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace. “They meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader,” Suffield said. Along the way, they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world. Suffield will be holding auditions for members of the public at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Jabara Black Box Flexible Theatre.

“Puffs” — Senior Hunter Bartholomew is directing the play “Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.” Written by New York-based playwright Matt Cox,  the play is essentially a “Harry Potter” spoof. It goes through the seven years that a boy wizard attends a magical school, but the twist is that it’s told through the point of view of the Puffs — an often forgotten group of wizards at the school. Bartholomew is still auditioning people who reach out to him via his Newman email bartholomew641345@newmanu.edu.

“5 Dwarfs and a Slipper: A Tale of Two Princesses” — Senior Catherine Madison is directing a play written by Newman graduate and current Technical Director Austin Schwartz. “‘5 Dwarfs and a Slipper: A Tale of Two Princesses’” is a mashup between two fairytale stories with many twists and turns along the way,” Madison said. “There may also be a — gasp — murder case that needs to be solved." Madison will be holding auditions for members of the public at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Jabara Black Box Flexible Theatre.
